Word Search · Hard
Hard word searches hide long words in a big 18 × 18 grid, where any word can run in any of eight directions — forwards, backwards, up, down or along either diagonal — and words are allowed to cross and share letters. That combination is what makes a word search genuinely difficult: scanning rows left to right is no longer enough. These free hard word search printables suit teens and adults, with ten long words per puzzle, a word bank and an answer key. Each is a free Letter or A4 vector PDF.
11+ years, teens and adults
Sustained attention, systematic visual search and the spelling of long, uncommon words.
A quiet challenge for upper-grade early finishers or a brain break for older students. For adults it is a screen-free puzzle for a coffee break, an activity session or a waiting room — and the answer key settles any "it isn't in there" debate.
Each puzzle is generated from a stable seed and downloads as a true vector PDF with its answer key — Letter or A4, print at 100%. Free for classroom and commercial use — see the licence. How the answer keys work

Type your own words, pick a grid size and difficulty, and print a custom word search with its answer key in seconds.
Three things, and these puzzles use all of them. Direction: a word can run in any of eight directions, so many read backwards or upwards. Size: an 18 × 18 grid has 324 letters to search, against 100 in a 10 × 10 easy puzzle. Overlap: words may cross and share letters, so the grid is denser and finding one word does not rule its letters out of another. The filler letters are drawn mostly from the letters of the hidden words, too, so there are plenty of false starts.
Start from the rarest letter in the word — the Q in QUADRILATERAL, the X in XYLOPHONE, the J in JUXTAPOSE — find every copy of it in the grid, then check all eight neighbours of each for the next letter. Working one direction at a time (every left-to-right word, then every right-to-left one) and running a pencil along the row you are scanning stops you skipping lines.
Yes — open the word search generator, choose Hard, set the grid to 18 or 20, and type your own list. Longer words make a harder puzzle, and turning overlap on lets them cross. Every custom puzzle downloads with its answer key as a Letter or A4 vector PDF.
Teens and adults, roughly ages 11 and up. The long words, big grid and backwards placements are too much for most younger children — try the easy word search for them instead.
Yes — a word can be hidden in any of eight directions: left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top or along any of the four diagonals. Words can also cross each other.
Yes — every hard word search is a free Letter or A4 vector PDF with the word bank and answer key, for home and classroom use, no signup required.
Page two of every PDF is the same grid with every letter of every hidden word ringed, generated from the same seed so it always matches.
