Medium mazes for kids

Medium mazes step up to 14–18 cell grids with genuine dead ends and a single correct route, but they still keep a few braided shortcuts so a child is never completely stuck. They are the sweet spot for ages 6 to 10 who have outgrown the easy set. Each one prints free as a vector Letter or A4 PDF with the answer key on page two.

Best for

6–10 years (grades 1–5)

Builds

Look-ahead planning, working memory and the discipline to trace a path before committing.

In the classroom

Great as a finished-work task or a rainy-day station. Because each maze has one solution, children can swap sheets and check each other against the answer key — a quick peer-marking exercise.

Each puzzle is generated from a stable seed and downloads as a true vector PDF with its answer key — Letter or A4, print at 100%. Free for classroom and commercial use — see the licence. How the answer keys work

Generate a medium maze

How is a medium maze different from an easy one?

The grid is larger and we braid far less. Our medium preset is a 16×16 recursive-backtracker maze with only about 15% of dead ends opened, so there are real traps and one true solution path. That single-path property is what makes it a proper puzzle rather than a wandering colouring exercise.

Why does a perfect maze matter?

A 'perfect' maze has exactly one path between any two cells — no loops. With light braiding we keep most of that structure, so the solution is unambiguous and the answer key is a single clean line. It also means the maze is always solvable by construction; our tests assert that every generated maze has a valid path before it ships.

Can I use these for a classroom competition?

Absolutely — the stable seed system helps here. Note the seed printed in each maze's footer and you can regenerate that exact maze later, so you can set the same puzzle to two classes or reprint a lost sheet without the layout changing.

Frequently asked questions

What age are medium mazes for?

Medium mazes suit ages 6 to 10. The 14–18 cell grids have real dead ends and one solution path, with a little braiding so children are not constantly stuck.

Do medium mazes have answer keys?

Yes. Every PDF includes the puzzle on page one and the same maze with the solution path overlaid on page two, generated from the same seed so it always matches.

Are medium mazes free to print?

Yes. Download as many as you like in Letter or A4 vector PDF, free for home and classroom use, with no account required.
